🧃What's on in the West: April 29th - 5th May

Happy Tuesday, Westies.

Autumn is hitting its stride – and there’s no better time to explore everything our vibrant west has to offer.

From riverside festivals and bustling markets to hidden art shows and after-dark adventures, there’s something happening in every pocket of the west this week. Whether you're planning a family day out, a low-key catch-up, or a spontaneous night on the town, we’ve got you covered from Footscray to Werribee, Williamstown to Melton.

We’ve pulled together the best of what’s on – free and ticketed, big and small – so you can spend less time scrolling and more time soaking it all up.

Local Business Recommendation: The Chestnut Tree Bookshop & Café

This week’s recommendation is from me. If you have a business you would like to recommend, fill this form out.

Part cosy cafe, part community bookshop, this indie gem is devoted to local literature. It proudly spotlights Indigenous and multicultural writers from Melbourne’s west. Browse new reads with your latte in hand while the kids enjoy the mini play corner.

A great place to find your next favourite book and support a neighbourhood business. (542 Barkly St, West Footscray – thechestnuttree.com.au)

Autumn Stroll: Werribee River at Wyndham Park

Crisp autumn weather is perfect for a nature walk, and Wyndham Park in Werribee is calling. This recently revamped park sits on the picturesque Werribee River, right in Werribee’s town centre. Stroll the riverside pathways – if you’re very lucky you might even spot a wild platypus in the river!

The park’s upgrade added fantastic new playgrounds and picnic areas, making it a destination in its own right. Bring the kids’ scooters, enjoy the autumn sunshine, and perhaps pack a picnic (there are plenty of spots to relax under the red gums).

It’s an easy, family-friendly outing that showcases the west’s natural beauty close to home.

If you’d like any other walks, the Victoria Walks site is a great starting point.

This Week in Local History

100 years ago this week, Footscray’s beloved footy club made history. On 2 May 1925, the Footscray Football Club (today’s Western Bulldogs) played its very first VFL game, taking on Fitzroy at Brunswick Street Oval.

The Dogs didn’t win that day (they went down by 9 points in their debut match), but one week later notched their first League victory – kicking off a century of proud westside football heritage.

As the Bulldogs celebrate their VFL/AFL centenary this year, it’s a reminder that Melbourne’s west has been punching above its weight in the sports world since 1925. Go Dogs (well, I’m a Carlton fan, but got to represent the west)
