🧃Inner West Melbourne Events: June 24th - 30th

Happy Tuesday, Westies.

The winter chill might be creeping in, but the west is heating up with live music, lantern-lit ghost tours, retro roller discos and more.

This week is full of gems — from inclusive comedy nights in Footscray to wild animal encounters at a brand-new community centre in Melton. You can spend your Saturday skating in a disco jungle, or shopping handmade crafts in Sunshin. There’s also moonlit fine dining at Shadowfax, arty openings in Altona, and a punk charity gig supporting a good cause.

Whether you're chasing a night of laughs, something creative with the kids, or a weekend stroll through a buzzing market, Melbourne’s west has something to light up your week.

Get your layers on — there’s plenty to discover out here.

Local Business Recommendation: Nonno’s Pizzeria

I LOVE a good pizza - Nonno’s Pizzeria in Williamstown has quickly become a local gem, celebrated for its bright and breezy atmosphere. Neon signage and mosaic-tiled counters greet you as you walk in, setting a friendly, casual mood perfect for catching up with mates or family.

I love the decor inside, and I always end up staring at the old Italian ads on the wall.

It’s always a great spot to go to, and it’s become a favourite of mine.

Also, when we brought the bub in, they were super accommodating.

Local News

I’m trying this section for the first time. Let me know what you think! I’ll aim to get around to covering some of the local announcements and news.

  • Sunshine transport super-hub funding confirmed: Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Premier Jacinta Allan visited Sunshine Station to reaffirm a $4 billion investment for the Melbourne Airport Rail project and Sunshine’s development as a major rail hub. The announcement – backed by the 2025–26 State Budget – ensures Sunshine will transform with new platforms and improved infrastructure to serve the airport link and future Suburban Rail Loop. This boost is set to enhance transport connectivity for Melbourne’s west.

  • Wyndham Art Gallery reopens after renovations: Werribee’s revamped Wyndham Art Gallery (inside the Cultural Centre) has opened its doors again after extensive theatre upgrade works. The first exhibition on show will be “JXSH MVIR: Forever I Live” – a retrospective of late Indigenous artist Josh Muir, running 11 July–28 September. The gallery’s refurbishment now offers a modern space for significant art exhibitions, and the Josh Muir showcase (co-curated with the Koorie Heritage Trust) will feature the Ballarat-born artist’s vibrant street-art-inspired works. The local arts community is excited to see this “stunning” exhibition kick off the gallery’s new chapter.

  • Punk rock charity gig in Footscray: An indie punk gig for charity is hitting Footscray on Saturday 28 June. Local punk bands Ze Wisenheimer, En_Zo, and Disgruntled Civil Servant will perform live with all proceeds supporting the charity GIVIT. The all-ages show (evening at a Footscray venue) combines good music with goodwill – attendees can enjoy high-energy local bands knowing their ticket is helping people in need. Tickets available here

  • West Gate Tunnel nearing completion: A quick infrastructure update – the massive West Gate Tunnel project, which will provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge, is in its final stages. This week, drivers are noticing new elevated ramps taking shape in Footscray and Yarraville. While the tunnel’s opening is slated for 2026, minor traffic disruptions and night works continue in the Spotswood-to-West Footscray stretch. Once finished, this project promises to slash commute times from Melbourne’s west and alleviate congestion on local roads in suburbs like Altona North and Brooklyn. Local councils are already planning landscaping and noise reduction measures for the new motorway’s impact zone. (Source: Big Build Victoria update, June 2025.)

  • Council initiatives for business and environment: Across the west, councils are launching positive community initiatives. Hobsons Bay Council has opened nominations for its biennial Business Excellence Awards, shining a light on outstanding local cafes, restaurants, retailers and manufacturers (nominations close in July). Meanwhile, Brimbank Council reported major progress on its climate action goals – cutting municipal greenhouse gas emissions by 78% in five years through solar panels, LED streetlights and Australia’s first fully renewable-powered aquatic centre in Sunshine. Brimbank is now drafting a new Biodiversity Strategy to protect urban green spaces and native species, with public input to be sought in July. These initiatives show local governments and communities working together to create a more sustainable and vibrant west.
